The moment the chatbot grew hands For about two years, most people's experience of artificial intelligence went like this. You typed a question into a box. A paragraph appeared. It was often good, sometimes wrong, occasionally uncanny. Then you closed the tab and went back to doing the actual work yourself. That was the era of the AI model . It was genuinely useful — it drafted your emails, explained your tax form, helped your kid with homework. But it was, fundamentally, a very well-read colleague who was tied to a chair. It could tell you exactly how to renew your passport. It could not go and renew it. Something changed around 2025 and 2026. The same underlying technology got connected to things: a web browser, your calendar, a spreadsheet, a company's internal database, a payment system. And the moment it could touch those things, it stopped being an answer machine and became something else. That something else is an AI agent . This series is about what it is, what it can and can't do, and what it means for your job, your money, your health, and the economy you live in. No jargon. No hype. Let's start with the distinction that everything else depends on. Model vs. agent: the difference in one picture Here's the shortest possible version: A model answers. An agent acts. A model is the engine. An agent is the car built around the engine — with a steering wheel, a destination, and a driver's ability to notice it took a wrong turn and correct. Concretely, an agent adds four things a bare model doesn't have. 1. A goal instead of a question. You don't ask "what's a good flight to Osaka?" You say "book me a flight to Osaka arriving before Friday lunchtime, under $900, aisle seat." That's an outcome, not a query. 2. A plan.
