CKB and Quantum Threat

Part 3 of 4

The Quantum Threat to Nervos, Part 3: The Lock, Not the Door Part three of a four-part series on what quantum computing actually means for Nervos Network and its native token, CKB (Common Knowledge Base). Disclosure: I hold CKB. This series presents information, not recommendations, and nothing in it is investment advice. Part 1 established that the quantum threat to cryptocurrency is a threat to signatures. Part 2 established that on CKB, as on every other major chain, spending publishes the public key that a future quantum computer would attack. So far, nothing distinguishes Nervos from Bitcoin. Same curve, same exposure, same eventual problem. The difference is what happens next — and it is not the difference most people expect. Nervos is not quantum-immune. It has no magic cryptography. What it has is an architectural decision made in 2019 that turns "replace the signature scheme" from a constitutional crisis into a software deployment. That decision is worth understanding precisely, because it is genuinely unusual, it is verifiable on mainnet today, and it comes with a catch that most coverage of Nervos leaves out. Bitcoin's quantum problem is not a cryptography problem Start with the comparison, because it clarifies what Nervos actually solved. Post-quantum cryptography is a solved field. The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) finalized its first post-quantum standards in August 2024 after an eight-year public competition. The algorithms exist, they are standardized, they are implemented in production software across the internet. Nobody is waiting on mathematicians. Bitcoin's difficulty is that its signature rules are consensus rules . Every node enforces "a valid signature looks like this." Changing that means changing what every node considers valid, which means a fork, which means persuading miners, exchanges, wallet developers, businesses, and holders to agree — not on whether quantum computers are a threat, but on a specific scheme, a…
