On Wednesday the FOMC voted 12–0 to raise the federal funds rate a quarter point to 3.75%–4.00%, its first hike since 2023, with new Chair Kevin Warsh committing to "a timelier return to the Committee's 2 percent goal" even as President Trump publicly called the committee "clowns" for hiking at all — a Fed-independence fight now out in the open. The week also delivered a genuine regulatory shock: the SEC's new five-year "innovation exemption" cleared tokenized U.S. stocks for onchain trading, sending Coinbase up 11.6% and Robinhood up 7.9%. Equities spent the week digesting both stories plus a 10-year Treasury yield that touched a fresh 52-week high of 5.00%; indices finished mixed, with the Nasdaq eking out a gain while the Dow, weighed by a Volkswagen-driven auto selloff, fell 1.7%. Overseas, the Bank of Japan hiked its own rate to a 31-year high of 1.25%, and at home, August retail sales blew past expectations with a 1.2% jump. Crypto had its own eventful week: the Clarity Act died in the Senate on a 49–50 cloture vote, yet Bitcoin shrugged it off, rallying back above $80,000 by the weekend. The throughline: central banks on both sides of the Pacific are tightening in lockstep against an inflation backdrop oil is mostly driving — leaving markets betting a resilient consumer can absorb the higher cost of money.
